The Right Way To Brush and Floss

It's something that we've been doing since we were kids, hopefully, every day. So most of us think we have a good handle on the basics, but all could use a refresher. It's always possible we are neglecting an aspect of our dental hygiene without noticing, so let's touch on the basics. But remember that during a regular checkup your Warren, OH, dentist can examine your smile and let you know where your dental care may be improved. For more information please reach out to Dr. Jim Snelson and Dr. Lee Snelson at Snelson & Snelson.

Brushing

The absolute basic thing to remember is to brush your teeth 2 times a day for about 2 minutes each time. A good strategy is to divide your mouth into four sectors and spend around 30 seconds in each. That is top right, top left, bottom right, and bottom left. While in each sector you want to clean the visible part of your teeth holding the brush at a 45-degree angle, using gentle circular strokes to clean your teeth. Then move to the inside portion of your teeth, and then the biting surfaces.

With an Electric Toothbrush

Two minutes sounds like so little time that, without realizing it, many of us don't brush for long enough. Many electric toothbrushes solve this problem by having a timer built-in. They can also simplify the cleaning process, they can also be better at removing plaque, although they do require a gentle touch when used, so refer to your manual for more help.

Flossing

It's in the harder-to-reach places where plaque likes to hide, so cleaning between our teeth once a day can help keep it at bay. You should tear a length of floss long enough to wrap the ends around your middle fingers, to prevent it from slipping, and have enough left that you can manipulate it with your thumbs and index fingers. Disposable dental floss picks can simplify this part of the process. Gently slide it between your teeth and move up and down along the teeth, not back and forth. You may see some blood if you've not flossed in some time, but if it's too much or it doesn't stop happening then consult with your Warren, OH, dentist.
